Great Scottish Run: Glasgow Half Marathon

2:00:44 – 4407th

Phew! I really, really hurt. This is the first half marathon that I have ever done. Good experience though – next time I’ll break 2 hours!

Can you spare some money please?

In May my girlfriend Mairead was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

The past few months have been difficult, tiring and strange for Mairead and those around her. It’s been tough for her physically and mentally – but I have been proud of the way she is coping with the illness and treatment.

A team of Mairead’s friends and family have decided to get together to raise some money for Cancer Research UK and show solidarity with Mairead by running the Hopetoun House 10km in October. I will be part of that team. I am also running the Glasgow half-marathon in September.

That’s why I’m asking you for a donation to help fight cancer.

Cancer affects all of us at some point in our lives, whether it’s directly, or through those that we love. Please do give generously – thank you!

Running up the hill

Just back from the second conditioning session from following the Army Fit programme. Today was sprints – up a hill in Kelvingrove Park. A bit different to the normal run – highlighting yet again how unfit I am. I can run a reasonable distance without too much pain – but too fast and I feel like collapsing.

The half marathon is only a month away – so I need to get some miles under my belt in the next two weeks. I need to run a couple of 10k and perhaps one 15k.

Walking back through Kelvinbridge I took a couple of photos on my phone – its an on-and-off rainy day – but it’s cleared up for the evening.

Get Fit in 50

My running is continuing to build up for the Great Scottish Run, and the Cancer Research 10k later this year.

I have run 10k twice this week, with a follow-up 4k last night.

I love running around Glasgow – especially when the weather is nice. I had to pause running to snap a few photos on my phone on the way home yesterday. It was just around sunset – and the clouds looked amazing.

One of my friends Alasdair Hunter is also currently training. He aims to get fit in 50 days – with a little exercise every day. He runs a blog at www.gfi50.com - so take a look!

Running and Reading

In preparation for the Great Scottish Run, I increased my usual route by 1km today.

I’m trying to find additional circuits to add to the route as I increase the distance I run over the next few weeks.

The running isn’t as painful as last week, which is a good sign. When I’m running I often have in mind part of a speech Will Smith made at the Kids Choice Awards in 2005:

Running and reading are important, which is why I just bought more books from Amazon – thanks Will Smith!
